My beer styles

The variety is (almost) limitless

If you take a closer look at the art of brewing, you will almost be overwhelmed by the variety of beers. In Germany alone, many different regions have produced their own beer. It is estimated that there are several thousand beers. Depending on the water hardness, for example, hoppy or less hoppy beers. In addition, different tastes have simply prevailed, so that in many areas more wheat beer, dark, pilsner or smoked beer is drunk. Last but not least, we owe it to the craft beer trend from the USA that many new beer styles have appeared on the market in Germany, which are very popular. So far I have brewed about 20 different beer styles: Helles, Heller Bock, Pilsner, Kölsch, Stout, Porter, American West Coast Ale, NEIPA (North Eastcoast Indian Pale Ale), Pale Ale, Dunkles, Indian Pale Ale, Red Ale, Amber Ale, light ale, Märzen, Weißbier Hell, Weißbier Dunkel, Weizen Bock, Brut IPA, ... whereby the varieties are always modified with a different malt mixture or different types of hops. Anyone who comes to visit me today can choose from at least four to eight types of beer that I have available. There are always special varieties available that you can enjoy in small quantities, but also varieties that you can drink until you drop them. A few candidates will now be introduced:

„Blonder Hans“
 Lager

Bottom-fermented, original wort 14%, approx. 5.5% alcohol, approx. 25 IBU

The Bavarian classic. Pilsner and Vienna malt give the beer its honey-like color. Hops from the Hallertau (Tradition & Mittelfrüh) give the "blonde Hans" the aroma and the slight bitterness. By the way, the real blonde Hans was THE original from Hamburg: Hans Albers (“La Paloma” and “On the Reeperbahn at half past twelve” should be familiar to everyone).

"“Talabfahrt“"
Wheat Beer (Weizen)

Top-fermented, original wort 13.5%, approx. 5% alcohol, approx. 15 IBU

One of my favorite beers. Refreshing and lively, sometimes cold-hopped! Incidentally, the name is an invention of my daughter Amelie. I was looking for a name and asked her (she was 10 years old at the time) just for fun if she had an idea - it should only have something to do with mountains ... then she shot from the gun: " Talabfahrt" (Valley run) ... Bingo, how cool is that ....

„Valley Boy“
American Ale

Top-fermented, original wort 14.5%, approx. 5.5% alcohol, 30-45 IBU.

Everyone likes that. Gold-coloured ale which becomes very fruity due to late and abundant hops. During my time in Los Angeles, I lived in the San Fernando Valley. I was therefore the “Valley Boy” for some of my colleagues.

This beer is based on the ale from "Sierra Nevada" - but it is not a copy.

"Storm Surge"
Indian Pale Ale

Top-fermented, original wort 17%, approx.6.4% alcohol, 30-60 IBU

IPA is certainly the best-known craft beer in Germany. A high alcohol content and a lot of hops make the beer stable, which previously made it possible to ship it from England to the British Colonies around the Kap of Africa. The alcohol content then hits you like a storm surge after 2-3 beers - almost out of nowhere.

I don't like it too hoppy, though. After all, you should also taste a malt body. But it can be fruity - and that's how it is.

„“Nice Try“
Who Knows

Top-fermented or bottom-fermented, original wort between 11% and 17%, approx. 5% -8% alcohol, 15-80 IBU

It is actually a self-created recipe in the brew pan that does not correspond to a clear beer style. Having this freedom is one of the great advantages of a hobby brewery.
